Checking a footwear retailer

Sneakers are where peer-to-peer resale is most developed and consumer law protects least. The legal guarantee of conformity requires a trader as seller: between private individuals it does not apply, which many guides leave unsaid.

Between private sellers, protection changes

Consumer guarantees require a trader. On a second-hand marketplace what remains are latent defect rules, from which a good-faith private seller can often contract out, and fraud where the seller knew. A private seller trading habitually for profit may be reclassified as a trader.

Platform authentication services

Several marketplaces offer authentication before shipping. That is contractual protection, not statutory: the platform sets and changes the terms freely. It does not replace identifying the seller, which is what lets you act if something goes wrong.

What we check on these retailers

Registration, legal disclosures, domain age, and whether they answer requests for supply evidence. These bear on the seller, not the product, which is what makes them verifiable by the reader.
